Copenhagen environmental conference 2009 is between 7th December to 18th December. Once again the talks will be on cutting the CO2 emissions to reduce global warming. US secretary of State — Hillary Clinton’s recent visit to India was to ressure on India to take quantifiable targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. India’s position however is clear and categorical that we are simply not in a position to take any legally binding emissions reductions.
I was looking at one of the website GapMinder they presented a data of the CO2 emission ( tonnes per person) with respect to the different countries. The different companies on the horizontal lines are lined up depending upon their GDP. Developed countries are shown up in bright Red color and the Low income countries are shown in the Blue color. India falls in Low Income group of countries and almost on the verge of crossing into the lower middle income.
On the Y axis is the CO2 emissions (tonnes per person). Each country is represented in a color specific to its income group and a sphere. Bigger the sphere larger its population.
Looking at the data it was rightly said by Jaimram Ramesh (Environment minister) that India is low on emission in terms of per person. Take a look at the CO2 emissions from developed countries. Even though their population is not large still their emissions is way beyond control. Before taking us to account Developed countries should take up the steps to cut down the CO2 emissions first.
Just some data: India’s per capita emissions are 1.8 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year. The US’s are 22.9 tons/year. (sources wikipedia)
However on the same note India too should not forget about the global warming and its consequences. Before it gets too late playing the waiting game to become Developed first and than start doing the emissions cuts we should take proactive steps.
I hope the Copenhagen Environment Conference 2009 bring in stern steps to cut global CO2 emissions. Because with no environment tomorrow there will be no Life.

Hmm.. but India has announced some major stuff today… in the wake of global warming.. a considerable move before it can force major economies to push hard on emissions norms.…
[…] days ago I wrote about India’s position in the CO2 emission charts in one of my blogs titled India against the developing countries on the Global warming. That time I tried to compare about India was low on CO2 emissions but it still need to cut back on […]
