Another way to stay connected

‘i’ Free
Mar 24th
iPhone, iMac (more of macbook), iPod….all of them the best of the gadget’s world. I have acquired most of them over the years hoping to use them regularly or daily when I am back in India. Now its been almost like a month I have been back in India and all the gadgets I had gathered since my stay back in U.S. have started to gather dust little by little.
Don’t deduce from the above statement that these gadgets are not useful in india any more. Back in US we used to buy gadgets to pass time, you had time and more important you had money. All these factor propel you to go ahead and buy these gadgets. You play with them for a while and finally get hooked to it, making them a integral part of your life.
Hold your thoughts right there, so once you are back to SWADESH there are lot of things to do (you definitely don’t want me to list them here.. you have read most of them on the FB updates by now
) and you don’t get time to play with these gadgets anymore. They become like your long lost girl friend which you call up (in case of gadgets open\start) once in a while and no longer the time come that you forget them. And so its happening the same with these i-Gadgets. But all is not lost with the ‘i’ phenomenon here, there always will be an ‘i’ in one form or the another. Currently the new found love of ‘i’ is in the form of ‘I’ndian Premier League (IPL).
So its still not ‘i’ Free for now
India @ home
Mar 13th
Its been long since I have blogged. I am trying to sink into the feeling of almost new India and being back at home. Thats what you feel the moment you step out of the airport. The sense of belonging is back.
Lot of things have changed back here since the last time I was here. The infrastructure has improved, the public transport has improved, to some extent even the connectivity. The main partying culture of the city and the people still remains the same or should I say have improved. Local eateries have expanded (in terms of their food option) and more to my un-liking so has the prices every where. The traffic has gone crazy and so has the roads in some cities (converted many roads to one way). But inspite of all this the feel and the spirit of the cities I live in or visited has not changed.
One thing people asked me what would I miss about U.S. when I will be back in India, the only thing I could say was the Internet. But I would take my words back the internet here is almost at par if you ready to pay the prices (which I feel is nominal). So many of you would still ask me than why this blog came so late, the answer to this is there are so many things (family, friends, party, food, holiday places, formula 1, IPL,.. list goes on) to catch up with you don’t even get time to check out your mail or blog. The only time I get to sit in front of my computer is office but the bad part there is lot of work & they have blocked everything.
But I will try to keep up with this and start posting something unusual and usual thing I liked or see back here. Till than stay safe and healthy, talk to you soon .
War of Words
Feb 11th
This poem describes about the current situation which mumbai is facing due to the politics of linguistic divide. How much can a great city like this handle and for how long…
Beginning of time there were two brothers,
Now left with only feuding neighbors.
Life in ruins in this stirred destruction,
Friend turning foes in this boiling hatred.
Everything new is broken again,
Nights no longer are glittering again.
A place that I knew of perfect color, happy faces all over.
Is now taken apart by these extreme ways, so many heart aches, so many faces
There is no Peace that was meant to be,
Thats what you get when you start the war of Words again….
Clean Slate
Jan 21st
Hatred filled minds
Judging eyes all around
Lies from every mouth
cut throat competition everywhere
No shoulders to cry over
Backstabbing at all corners
Blood on our hands
nobody walking together again.
want to believe everything still not over
Like a clean slate want to everything to start all over again.
Sleepless in Virtual World
Jan 19th
The virtual (internet) world has always loved the night life. It flourished during the night time. Once the sun had set in people would come out of their real world, let go all the problems and would don a new avatar. They would than immersed themselves in their own little virtual world where in people met other people, discussed about what happened, what’s new, they laughed, they cried, romanced .. had a great time in short. In this world they were a completely different personality it didn’t matter what they were in real life but in here they could be anything even a superman. Any dream of theirs could come true in this virtual world.
This trend started off with the first virtual environment which were created by chat rooms (remember yahoo chats) people used to stay awake late night just to meet different people, chatted, flirted, played, watched (video chats) with others for hours sometimes till the dawn just to realize that they had to go back into their real world. Many friends were made, many took it to the next level some got married where as some broke out. This was a new world which everyone liked. No doubt that good looks was still helpful but here again the other important factor was they way to conversed. Here in this new world more than looks for the first time good conversing was the new charm.
This chat world after few years evolved to a new world of social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut and the whole gamut of it. In this people didn’t had to be online to chat or remain in contact with other people. They could connect with their friend by leave message, share photos, their updates.. etc. These websites also gave them a common platform to start up their group activity at anytime they want. This change had made the world once place which didn’t had to be bogged down by the different time zone.
Similarly with the social networking website blog also became popular. Blogosphere provided a medium for people to not only pen down their thoughts online but to start sharing it, get feedback on it and start interacting. Before this thoughts were a part of an old diary kept tucked beneath the bed or in the closet.
But still here in this of social networking and blogs the night time was the best as people would return back home after office hours\school\college\finish off their daily chores loosen up and than start checking up whats new in their virtual world.
People say that time changes fast and along with it the people and the world around it. The virtual world had always the first one to embrace the change. The new age of Information was fast and it was more of a real time. People needed information fast and did not wanted to be bogged down to a place or a time. They wanted to be connected to people at everytime. Now the virtual world and real world intermingled. This new virtual world was called Twittersphere. People used the 140 character (similar to sending SMS) to its full use. The 140ism was a new and a quick way to tell people what you were doing and got to know what others were doing all the time. This broke all the time & space barriers. People could tweet from their mobile phone or computer from anywhere. The whole world was one place one in the same time line.
Even with the advantage of being able to tweet at any time from any place people still loved to tweet at night. One of the studies says the twitters tweet mostly after 4:00 PM. Which incidentally coincides with the end of the office hours and the start of twilight. Its the time you can peacefully devote to your virtual world the time and the necessary attention with out someone looking over your shoulders.
Leaving you with this thoughts is a song I like.. till then Jaagte Raho….
New World
Jan 16th
The sleepy city still waking up from its dream,
sun continues to plays hide and seek again.
Free falling from the hazy sky,
dancing and dribbling the droplet hits the ground.
Rain follows soon with the thundering cloud,
washing all the weariness away
I lay in bed hearing the rain,
thinking of waking up in the new world again.
Double entendre
Jan 9th
This week I received an email from my client which had a subject line “check out the new 2010 Hooters calendar”. The mail had an attachment and its said – “Don’t be afraid.”. By now you might have guessed what was I thinking at that time. For the ones who have not guessed it yet you can check out the meaning here and for my american friend Hooters has another meaning too check out this link.
Coming back to the email so I tried opening the attachment making sure no one was looking at my screen. It turned out to be the new 2010 calendar with different species of OWL.
Now I am sure that this is not the first time you or me might be hearing such a double entendre word or a phrase. These double entendre words have been used at lot of places starting right from our daily vocabulary for social interaction to literature, entertainment which includes theater, music & movies. Even Oxford dictionary have started including slangs and these double entendre words. Now once the vocab gets affected how are we suppose to protect our literature and art not to get corrupted with it.
I believe earlier it started as a way to avoid direct confrontation by hiding the actual meaning of the sentence and delivering it in a more subtle and humorous ways like a pun statement. People did not feel angry because most of them couldn’t understand it and was mostly presented in a humorous way. It started mostly in sitcoms and comedy plays. But later on people started to use these Innuendo in a socially acceptable sexual humor. Shakespeare was the early ones to start using it in his plays. Examples of sexual innuendo and double-entendre occur in Geoffrey Chaucer‘s The Canterbury Tales , in which the Wife of Bath’s tale is laden with double entendres. The most famous of these may be her use of the word “queynte” to describe both domestic duties (from the homonym “quaint”) and genitalia.
The so called soap operas and the comedy shows and sitcoms have also taken up these innuendo to the next level. Double entendres are popular in modern movies, as a way to conceal adult humor in a work aimed at general audiences. For e.g. In The World Is Not Enough, when the well-endowed female assistant of the Swiss banker asks Bond ,”Would you like to check my figures?”, referring to the receipt of payment, Mr. Bond replies slyly, “Oh, I’m sure they’re perfectly rounded.”
Now don’t think that Indian literature and movies have not been a part of the linguistic innuendo. Govinda movies songs were the first to start with. Currently it has been taken to the next level with actors like Akshay kumar in his recent movies with his chauvinistic dialogue in “Kambakt Ishk” and the recent priyadarshini move “De Dhana Dhan”
If you see and hear so much of double entendre words, phrases, movies, literature, songs in day to day life. How is a normal person suppose to interpret a statement now a days.
Leaving you with this thought of how our world has changed and adopted to this linguistic change is a song from the famous Dada Kondke song
2010 Another season of change for Formula 1
Dec 23rd
Year 2010 brings a lot of changes to Formula 1 racing season. Ever since 1947 – the first time when Formula 1 race was held, it has evolved. It has survived the whole gamut of racing events to retains its spot as the most popular, the fastest, the most followed and the niche of the racing event every year.
But in last 4 years we have seen this sports change like the english season. Along with the ever changing rules, this year the players of this games have changed. When I say players of this game, I meant both the racing drivers and the constructers. Here are some of the higlights
- 13 teams (means 26 racing car) for the race which includes 4 new teams.
- Racing driver
- kimi Raikkonen the “Ice man” out of Formula 1 :(
- Fernando Alonso joins Ferrari. Hope he does not repeat what he did with Lewis in Mc Laren.
- Jenson Button joins McLaren
- Nicko Rosberg joins Mercedez . Check out for this guy, he is good.
- Lotus sign Trulli and Kovalainen
- Kamui Kobayashi joins Sauber
- Finally Michael Schumacher after his oo’s and aah’s moment of returning and not returning from his retirement is finally over. He is making a comeback but not with Ferrari this time but with Mercedez. Do you think he will be able to get his 8th championship title in his comeback?
- Constructor Team
- 4 new team – Campos Meta, Virgin racing, US F1 team, Lotus F1 team.
- Brawn GP team bought by Mercedes
- Sauber takes Toyota’s place on 2010 grid
- Rule changes (check this link for more details)
- No refueling
- A more complex points system. Guys make the sport competitive and difficult for racing team and not for the viewers.
- No KERS to help heavy or tall drivers
- Changes to how drivers are given time penalties after a race
- A reduction in the amount of one-day aerodynamic tests a team may conduct from eight to six
- Teams may now substitute aerodynamic test days for 24 hours of full-scale wind tunnel testing
- Teams which choose to bring in a driver with no prior F1 experience will be permitted an extra days’ testing on a non-calendar track
- A new clause stipulates that pit space will be allocated “on a strictly equal basis” – this space will be under pressure with the addition of new teams in 2010
- Teams are no longer allowed to use powered devices to lift the cars in the pit lane
- Although tyre warmers remain legal a new clause says the heating element may only act on the surface of the tyre
- There are new restrictions on how teams can test tyres
- Drivers who use two additional engines during a weekend will be moved back ten places on the grid at that race and the next one
- Drivers who get away slowly on the formation lap and cannot start from their designated starting position must start the race from the pit lane.
- During safety car periods drivers must lap slower than a designated lap time displayed in their cars
So let me know what part will keep you interested for F1 championship 2010. For me its going to be race between Alonso, Lewis Hamilton & the great Schumacher.
Right to Vote made compulsory
Dec 21st
Recently Gujarat assembly has passed a bill on saturday which makes voting mandatory for local body election. This has been done first time in the history of India. This step was taken because the voter turn out in the local and municipal elections were very low.
- Image via Wikipedia
Under the bill, if a voter fails to vote for the reasons other than prescribed in the rules, he may be declared a “defaulter voter” and would face consequences for which rules will be framed and placed before the assembly for its approval later. The bill also allows negative voting if the voter does not wish to vote for any of the listed contestants. The manner of negative voting and its impact on other candidates will be worked out by the state government through special rules framed later. “Under consideration is a proposal to disqualify all candidates in case negative voting is the highest,” an official said.
Its not only India which has enforced this rule but in all there are other countries which has done so the list is given below:
- Argentina (compulsory for citizens between 18 and 70 years old, non-compulsory for those older than 70)
- Australia (compulsory enrollment and voting for state* and national (federal) elections for all adults over 18).
- Brazil[4] (non-compulsory for citizens between 16 and 18 years old and those older than 70)
- Chile (enrollment voluntary)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Ecuador (compulsory for citizens between 18 and 65 years old; non-compulsory for persons aged 16–18, illiterate people, and those older than 65)
- Fiji
- Liechtenstein
- Nauru
- Peru (compulsory for citizens between 18 and 70 years old, non-compulsory for those older than 70)
- Singapore
- Switzerland (compulsory in the Canton of Schaffhausen only)
- Turkey
- Uruguay
- India only for the state of Gujarat
- (U.S.) State of Georgia in 1777:
- Austria (introduced 1929 for presidential elections and 1949 in some states for parliamentary elections, abolished step by step between 1982 and 2004)
- Netherlands (introduced 1917 along with universal suffrage, abolished 1970)
- Soviet Union: while voting was not de-jure obligatory, voting was de-facto enforced.
- Spain (1907-1923, but not enforced now)
- Venezuela
*In South Australia it is not compulsory to enroll for state elections. Nevertheless, as the enrollment form is a combined Federal/State one, with no provision to not enroll for the State,it is in effect compulsory.
Arguments in favour of mandatory voting
A common argument for compulsory voting is that such a system guarantees that the government represents a majority of the population, not only individuals who vote. This helps ensure that governments do not neglect sections of society that are less active politically, and victorious political leaders of compulsory systems may potentially claim greater political legitimacy than those of non-compulsory systems with lower voter turnout.
A key argument for compulsory voting is that it prevents interference with access to the vote, in a similar way that the secret ballot is designed to prevent interference with the votes actually cast. Compelling voters to the polls for an election mitigates the impact that external factors may have on an individual’s capacity to vote such as the weather, transport, or restrictive employers. It is a measure to prevent disenfranchisement of the socially disadvantaged. Polls are generally held on a Saturday or Sunday, to ensure that working people can fulfill their duty to cast their vote. Similarly, mobile voting booths may also be taken to old age homes and hospitals to cater for immobilized citizens, and postal voting may be provided for people who are away from their electorate on election day.
If voters do not want to support any given choice, they may cast spoilt votes or blank votes. According to compulsory voting supporters, this is preferred to not voting at all because it ensures there is no possibility that the person has been initimidated or prevented from voting should they wish. In certain jurisdictions, voters also have the option to vote none of the above if they do not support any of the candidates to indicate clear dissatisfaction with the candidate list rather than simple apathy at the whole process.
Another potential argument is that it will make people think about the tough issues more. This in turn might make governments less squeamish to bring up tough and possibly unpopular issues that need to be addressed.
It is also argued that voting is a “civic duty”, like paying taxes, and is important for the harmonious functioning of a society.
Arguments against of mandatory voting
A common argument against compulsory voting holds that voting is not a civic duty, but rather a civil right. While citizens may exercise their civil rights (free speech, marriage, etc.) they are not compelled to. Compulsory voting can be seen as infringing a basic freedom of the citizen. Some consider the fining of recalcitrant voters to be more oppressive still.
Further, compulsory voting may infringe other rights. For example, most Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that they should not participate in political events. Forcing them to vote explicitly denies them their freedom of religious practice. In some countries with universal voting, Jehovah’s Witnesses and others may be excused on these grounds. If however they are obliged to show up to vote, they can still use a blank or invalid vote.
Some individuals resent the idea of compulsory voting, particularly if they have no interest in politics or no knowledge of the candidates. Others may be well-informed, but have no preference for any particular candidate, and have no wish to give support to the incumbent political system. Such people may vote at random simply to fulfill legal requirements: the so called donkey-vote may account for 1-2% of votes in these systems, which may affect the electoral process. Similarly, citizens may vote with a complete absence of knowledge of any of the candidates, or deliberately skew their ballot to slow the polling process or disrupt the election.
Supporters of voluntary voting assert that low voter participation in a voluntary election is not necessarily an expression of voter dissatisfaction or general political apathy. It may be simply an expression of the citizenry’s political will, indicating satisfaction with the political establishment in an electorate.
This causes lot of trouble for me as I live in Gujarat and from now onwards I have to be present there for voting. If not I am not sure what consequnces or fines I have to pay. But anything which is good for democracy and proper governance is fine with me.
So what do you think about this

Information Bombardment
Dec 13th
Information keeps on bombarding you every minute in the form of emails, Twitter feeds, Facebook stream, Google Reader or Blogs constantly shooting more articles. News from 24 hours news channel, news paper or web. Books glaring from the library shelf or e-book in our reader or your office repository, papers on various subjects keeps bombarding on you. This information feed has become so frequent that these keep on flowing every single sec even when you are sleeping. According to a new study
The speed of modern life is 2.3 words per second, or about 100,000 words a day. That is the verbiage bombarding the average person in the 12 hours they are typically awake and “consuming” information.
I don’t think we read all this information actively we might just glance through over it or hear it. According to another study if we add images, such as videos and computer games, and we are faced with the equivalent of 34 gigabytes of information each day — enough to overload the typical laptop inside a week.
Not only this information is reaching us at a fast pace but around the world it is getting codified (i.e. getting converted to digital format and increasing) at a very fast rate with the help of internet. In 1930 some group of scientist said that the information around the world get double every 30 years which is almost like a generation. That was the reason for generational gap because parent and children both would work and gain different knowledge at a different rate as they would work in different field causing them difficult to understand. But by 1970′s that number shrank again to only 7 years. So now if you see your younger brother or lets say your junior in your office they seem to have a difference of opinion and a way to look at things. The generation gap has now evolved in the same generation with a time line of less than a decades. It is also a challenge for everybody because what he\she has learned 7 years ago changes he\she has to keep up with that knowledge. for e.g. poor software engineer who has to keep with the change in technology and programming languages. Or a normal user who keeps on fiddling with the new gadgets which keeps of changing\updating at a fast pace.
But as I said for knowledge workers like us it has become more difficult than ever before. Studies say that in couple of years the information will get doubled every 11 hours. So from the time you go to sleep of saturday night and wake up late next morning you will be half as stupid more as you were last night. As individual we have to learn how to seek information in an optimal way i.e. to get information in a quick time to keep your self updated. This is necessary because we have only 24 hours in a day. Its your attention span and how much you can grasp things from this information bombardment.
